A PhenoTyper setup is powered by EthoVision XT. EthoVision XT can among other things program certain stimuli like lights or sounds, automatically track the movement, and identify the behaviors of rats and mice. PhenoTyper is designed to work with EthoVision XT, and thus using them together makes data acquisition seamless.

  • Program hardware with the hardware control module
  • High throughput and reliable data collection
  • Simultaneously record in up to 8 PhenoTypers

Which hardware do I need?

PhenoTyper 3000 homecage

PhenoTyper comes in a variety of sizes and configurations. This myriad of options allows you to optimize and adapt your setup for any test you are going to do. To facilitate this you can build your PhenoTyper to have the right fit for you. Various add-ons, third-party integrations, and sizing options make your PhenoTyper truly unique.

  • PhenoTyper 3000 (30x30x43.5cm)
  • PhenoTyper 4500 (45x45x66cm)
  • Larger sizes are possible

In order to work, PhenoTyper needs a computer to start setting up and gain data from your experiment. PhenoTyper has been tested with the following computer:

  • A Dell Precision T5810, with a Xeon E5-1620 v2 Processor (3.7 GHz) with 8 GB RAM, under Windows 8.1 - 64bit, with 250GB of available hard disk space.

How do I collect my data?

How many PhenoTypers do I need?

Having multiple PhenoTypers increases the through-put of your research. Having all your repetitions conducted at the same time decreases covariance caused by time or external influences. Usually PhenoTypers are used in one of multiple 4 cage systems.

Consistency is key

Consistency between repetitions is vital for conducting proper research. PhenoTyper ensures that every trial is the same. The new internal white light ring provides consistent lighting, which is important for good tracking with EthoVision XT.

How do I customize my PhenoTyper?

You can design your PhenoTyper in a multitude of ways. Noldus' various add-ons like running wheels, shelters, and measurement tools, make the PhenoTyper adaptable to many different applications.

Collecting data

PhenoTyper has been designed to work with EthoVision XT seamlessly. This makes your experiment setup, data collection and analysis easy. The uniform design of PhenoTyper ensures that every experiment is the same.

Previously, we used three or four devices and we think: how do we make them into a single device? Therefore, we have collaborated with Noldus to modify the basic PhenoTyper to have one device to do all these things.
